But persuasion doesn’t mean you’re rattling off statistics\, arguing about policy\, or convincing someone to do a 180º on the spot. In fact\, persuasion starts with listening. \nIn a fractured political environment\, it is both more challenging and more important to engage with those who might not vote like us (or not vote at all!). We know talking with voters works\, but more often than not\, Democratic campaigns start too late and target too narrowly. They underinvest in persuasion conversations\, and ignore 1 in 4 potential voters because they’re unlisted or mislisted in the data Democrats rely on. Swing Left’s new Ground Truth canvassing program will change that. By starting early and having empathetic listening conversations with every voter\, we’re uncovering concerns that campaigns need to address\, earning trust in communities that might feel overlooked\, and making sure Democrats are speaking to what people actually want. SUMMARY:RESILIENCE AND RADICAL HOPE FOR ACTIVISTS
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn how to stay engaged for the long haul and live from a place of possibility and hope for the 2026 election cycle.\n\nIn this workshop\, we will explore strategies to help us stay steady and resilient by briefly exploring:\n\n\nFinding hope and even joy in activism.\nCoping strategies to help us to thrive.\nBringing our bodies back into balance. \nBuilding an internal motivation system.  \nFinding activist roles in alignment with our unique skills\, interests\, and values\nCultivating strength in comunity.\n\nThis program is for new and experienced activists who want to stay healthy in mind\, body and spirit as they engage in effective action to make a positive difference in these times. Led by experience mental health professionals and activists\, we will go through exercises and provide resources for your resiliency.\n\n\nPresenter Bios: \nDuring the height of the AIDS epidemic\, Kevin Berrill\, LICSW  pioneered national campaigns to counter anti-gay violence and to organize LGBTQ university students. Later\, as a clinical social worker\, he counseled patients facing cancer\, as well as the dying and bereaved. Over the past decade\, Kevin has volunteered his time to raise money and canvass voters on behalf of progressive candidates. \nRobert Ortega completed his BA at Georgetown University and received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon. He has published research in the fields of critical consciousness and his dissertation explored the relationship between political action behaviors and mental health symptoms. He is an expert in the relationship between mental health symptoms and sociopolitical stressors. Dr. Ortega regularly gives training to mental health clinicians on how to treat people navigating political stress\, as well as how to treat burnout among community activists. \nDeb Rubenstein\, PhD\, LICSW\, has been a social worker in the Washington\, DC area for over 30 years. Now mostly retired\, she has been a care manager\, psychotherapist\, support group facilitator and program manager at a nonprofit serving older adults and family caregivers. Deb is a joyful participant in protests and vigils\, an enthusiastic donor to good causes\, and a reluctant phone-banker.

DESCRIPTION:Politics is about persuasion—reaching out\, person to person\, and bringing others along. But persuasion doesn’t mean you’re rattling off statistics\, arguing about policy\, or convincing someone to do a 180º on the spot. In fact\, persuasion starts with listening. \nIn a fractured political environment\, it is both more challenging and more important to engage with those who might not vote like us (or not vote at all!). We know talking with voters works\, but more often than not\, Democratic campaigns start too late and target too narrowly. They underinvest in persuasion conversations\, and ignore 1 in 4 potential voters because they’re unlisted or mislisted in the data Democrats rely on. Swing Left’s new Ground Truth canvassing program will change that. By starting early and having empathetic listening conversations with every voter\, we’re uncovering concerns that campaigns need to address\, earning trust in communities that might feel overlooked\, and making sure Democrats are speaking to what people actually want. That’s how we help Democrats flip the House in the 2026 midterm elections. \nThis new approach to voter contact means we’ll be talking with all kinds of people\, and we know that can be intimidating.
