Abigail Spanberger

Abigail Spanberger

Abigail Spanberger has dedicated herself to one mission: to protect and serve the United States of America.

Even after redistricting  VA-07 remains a somewhat Republican district (R+3) but Cook rates it as a toss-up.

At every turn in her life, U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger has dedicated herself to one mission: to protect and serve the United States of America. Her love of country and commitment to the Virginia families she represents is at the center of everything she does. As a federal law enforcement officer, CIA counterterrorism officer, and now a member of Congress, she swore an oath to defend and uphold the Constitution. No party boss or special interest can get in her way when she’s fighting for her constituents.

Her opponent, Yesli Vega is a far-right extremist who proudly described herself as “the most conservative candidate” in the VA-07 primary. Her record proves it: Vega promoted conspiracy theories that the election was stolen and questioned whether Virginians’ legally cast ballots were legitimate. She wants to see abortion banned and Roe v. Wade overturned and aligned herself with some of the most radical, far-right personalities in Washington.

HER BACKGROUND

Abigail Spanberger grew up in Henrico County and is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia. After college, she moved to Germany and earned her MBA from a dual-degree German-American program between the GISMA business school and Purdue University.

Spanberger has always served her country and community. She began her career in public service as a federal law enforcement officer working narcotics and money laundering cases with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.  Next, Spanberger joined the CIA as a case officer. She worked undercover her entire time at the Agency —  collecting intelligence, managing assets, and overseeing high-profile programs to combat terrorism and keep Americans safe.

In 2018, Spanberger became the first Democrat since 1968 to be elected to represent Virginia’s 7th Congressional district. In Congress, she has consistently been ranked as one of the most bipartisan Members of Congress..

ON THE ISSUES

When the Supreme Court struck down Roe, Spanberger swiftly responded. “As a mother, sister, and daughter, I know how today’s ruling feels for millions of women throughout America. I strongly disagree with the majority’s decision, as it undermines the right to privacy and a woman’s right to choose.”  She is a co-sponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify the decisions in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

Spanberger believes that addressing gun violence and protecting lives should not be a partisan issue; it is a public safety issue. She supports universal background checks, limiting high-capacity magazines, and banning the manufacture, sale, and transfer of assault-style weapons.  She recently voted for the bi-partisan gun safety legislation.

Spanberger has said that climate change is a direct threat to the safety and strength of America’s future. “The science is real — and the next generation of Virginians is counting on us to take this threat seriously.” In Congress, she has worked to create good-paying clean energy jobs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency, protect our air and water, and safeguard Virginia’s public lands for recreation and conservation alike.
