Greg Stanton

Greg Stanton

Stanton has built a record of results and earned a reputation for working across the aisle to get things done.

The new 4th Congressional District in Arizona has a PVI of D+2.  The district now spans the northeast portion of Maricopa County, and this new configuration is a diverse, urban district that has been trending more Democratic.  That doesn’t make it an entirely safe district in this very purple state.

Congressman Greg Stanton has never focused on scoring political points or giving a nice speech. He’s developed a reputation in Congress for working across the aisle and being a tireless advocate for Arizona. He knows the issues of his state and his district, inside and out. As a former mayor of Phoenix, Stanton knows how to get things done and has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his constituents.

The victory of Kelly Cooper in the primary sent the Republican establishment reeling after he defeated DC favorite Tanya Wheeless, a banking lobbyist who had the backing of national Republicans. They have a real reason to be concerned: Their nominee is a no-name candidate with anemic fundraising and a nearly non-existent campaign operation, who won his primary with less than 30% of the vote after running on a MAGA Trump agenda.

HIS BACKGROUND

As a child, Stanton watched his dad take the bus to work every day, and he got his first job flipping burgers. He understands what working families need to pay the bills and make ends meet.

After graduating from public high school in West Phoenix, Stanton attended Marquette University and earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. He worked as an education attorney before turning to public service. He served on the Phoenix City Council from 2000-2008 and then became the city’s two-term mayor (2012-2018) He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2018.

Whether it was as Phoenix’s mayor, his time on the Phoenix City Council, or now as a member of Congress representing the Greater Phoenix area, Greg Stanton has built a record of results and earned a reputation for working across the aisle to get things done. He successfully extended Phoenix’s light rail system and bus services, created thousands of good-paying jobs, increased funding for public safety and police officers, and he works every day to crack down on the opioid crisis devastating Arizona communities.

ON THE ISSUES

Rep. Stanton fully supports a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions. After the Dobbs’ decision, he said, “The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe will have immediate and devastating effects for Arizona women’s health and safety—and their fundamental right to determine their futures. This is a dark, dark day for our country.”

Stanton has been recognized as Gun Sense Candidate by Moms Demand Action and supports universal background checks as well as a ban on assault rifles.  He has voted for every Congressional bill on gun control since entering the House.

The Congressman has been outspoken on the issue of climate change and its impact on Arizona. Stanton recently said, “In Arizona, we’re living through the reality of climate change and we’re getting hit harder than almost anywhere in the U.S. We see it with extreme heat, a historic drought and a nearly year-round forest fire season.”  That’s why he has been an avid supporter of re-entering the Paris Treaty, building new water infrastructure, and voting for the climate provisions in the Anti-Inflation Act.
