Mitchell Berman is the Democratic nominee for Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District, having won his August 2026 primary to take on Republican Rep. Bryan Steil in one of the nation's top House battlegrounds. A registered nurse and political newcomer, Berman is running because he says Washington's culture of corruption is putting corporate profits ahead of Wisconsin families.

Berman was raised in a working-class family in rural Wisconsin, where his father built a small roofing business and his mother worked at a local foundry. He started mowing lawns at 12 and earned his nursing assistant license at 17. The first in his family to graduate college, Berman worked three jobs and took out student loans to pay his way through school, and got his start as a union Teamster while still a student.

With more than 23 years in health care, Berman has spent over a decade caring for veterans, active-duty servicemembers, and their families at the VA, and continues to work night shifts as a board-certified emergency room nurse. He has been a proud union member at every organized facility where he's worked, including the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals and National Nurses United. He and his wife are raising their two daughters in Racine County, and he enters the general election backed by the United Auto Workers, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, End Citizens United, and Nurses for America.
