We feel like we’ve stepped into the Kingdom of Oz: Yes, we’re talking about a U.S. Senate race in Kansas as being in play. The Cook Political Report moved the race from Likely Republican to Lean Republican. Democrat Adam Hamilton, a 36-year pastor of a Kansas United Methodist Church, is trying to unseat incumbent Republican Roger Marshall.
The sudden exodus from the Republican Party candidate is due, in a significant way, to the rising prices of fertilizer and fuel, both crucial commodities to the farming industry in Kansas. Trump’s announcement of blocking the purchase of from the Canadian aerospace company Bombardier, which has a plant in Wichita and is a major employer in the state. But the shift also stems from the controversy about Marshall, a former OBGYN. His former OBGYN practice sued more than 700 patients for unpaid bills, leading to arrest warrants for some who missed court. The New York Times found that patients sued by Marshall were routinely charged 18 percent interest, and some had bank accounts garnished.
- Hamilton is running on affordability or the lack of it in today’s economy. He supports:
- Protecting Kansas families from rising energy bills
- Ensuring the elderly have a stable economic future
- Promoting affordable housing
- Lowering healthcare costs
- Protecting agriculture, producers and consumers
- Ending the chaos and corruption in Washington DC
- Restoring the right to organize and other pro-labor laws
- Hamilton beat nine other Democrats running in the August primary.
- J.D. Vance blasted Hamilton’s Resurrection church for sponsoring the Kansas City LGBT pride event this summer. Vance said the group that organized the event is “an anti-Christian hate group.” Hamilton responded, “Trying to demean or marginalize the faith of other people, that’s just wrong. It’s also against the Christian teachings to love, serve and care for one another.”
- Hamilton and Marshall faced each other in a debate at the Kansas State Fair in mid-September. C-SPAN covered and recorded it. The intro to the recording says, “Sen. Marshall drew frequent boos from the crowd, particularly over his residence in Florida and close ties to President Trump.”
- Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1932.
