Minnesota’s 2nd district, the state’s most competitive, became more suburban and less rural. However, it is only D+1 and is currently rated a tossup.
Congresswoman Angie Craig never planned for a career in politics — but she did want to serve her community, and change how Washington works in the process. She’s running for re-election because her work has only begun to help build a Minnesota for everyone — one where every member of every family has an outstanding education, career training or retraining for a good job, and the opportunity to earn a good life.
This race features a matchup between Rep. Craig and her opponent from 2020, Tyler Kistner. Craig bested Kistner in that race by just under 3%.
Rep. Angel Craig was raised by a single mom and grew up in a mobile home park. She watched her mom work hard and complete her teaching degree over nine years while raising three kids with the help of her grandmother, who worked in a union shoe factory well into her 70s. These strong women showed Rep. Craig what grit and determination look like.
Rep Craig worked two jobs and took out student loans to put herself through state college. She started her career as a newspaper reporter and worked her way up over 20 years in business to lead a workforce of 16,000 for a major Minnesota manufacturer.
Although she was defeated in her first run for Congress in 2016, Rep. Craig won her rematch in 2018, becoming the first openly lesbian mother to be elected to Congress, the first woman to be elected in Minnesota’s 2nd district, and the first openly gay person elected to Congress from Minnesota.
Rep. Craig believes that the decision about whether and when to start a family is between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her faith – not governments or politicians. She will not stop fighting until every woman’s fundamental right to control her own body is protected and Roe is restored.
Rep. Craig has said that climate change deeply impacts our environment and our economy and that’s why she’s supported bold action to strengthen our renewable energy sources, create sustainable jobs well into the future, and tackle climate change head-on. She’s also focused on finding lasting, commonsense solutions for Minnesota farmers who are experiencing severe weather events.
Rep. Craig has said, “I’m a gun owner and supporter of the Second Amendment, but that support goes hand in hand with doing everything I can to keep our children and our communities safe from gun violence. I was proud to help pass legislation this year to improve gun safety nationwide, but there is more to do to ensure no American has to worry about their loved one being killed in an act of senseless violence.”
