Together We Elect’s Meet the Candidates series has been a great success, connecting our volunteers with key candidates who will make the difference in safeguarding our basic rights and freedoms.
We’ve played host to Ohio U.S. Senate candidate and current Rep. Tim Ryan, who is mounting a spirited campaign for an open U.S. Senate seat. Ryan has increased his lead over the Trump-endorsed J.D. Vance who has compared abortion rights with slavery.
Newsweek magaine recently noted that, “Amid dire predictions of Democratic losses in the upcoming November midterm elections, [Democratic] candidates actually appear to be well positioned to flip at least two Republican-held Senate seats in Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to recent polls.”
The second Meet the Candidates event featured Pennsylvania and U.S. Reps. Susan Wild (PA-07) and Matt Cartwright (PA-08). Both are strong incumbents working hard to retain their seats in their battleground districts. The evening was cosponsored by Together We Elect, Activate America, and MA Flip PA.
The most recent event featured the indomitable Cheri Beasley, the first Black woman to serve as Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Now running for the U.S. Senate, she will be the first Black Senator from North Carolina if she wins.
Beasley is facing far-right, Trump-loving Rep. Ted Budd for an open, Republican-held seat. A proven statewide vote-getter, Beasley is one of our best chances to flip a Senate seat.

The Numbers, They Are a Changin’
Polls tell us that this midterm election may not follow the historical trend of non-Presidential year elections. Overturning Roe v. Wade has changed the equation. Now more Democrats are saying they are planning to vote in November.
“With the midterm elections less than five months away, the decision by SCOTUS has sent shockwaves through the electorate,” says Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “Men are +12 points and women are +18 points more likely to support congressional candidates who pledge to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade. Digging deeper, 63% of women, including 74% of suburban women, are also concerned that the Court’s decision is a harbinger of things to come.”
We need to build on that momentum and help those candidates who will enable a foolproof majority to codify reproductive and other civil rights.
