Marie Gluesenkamp Perez
Washington, Congress (WA-03)
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez won her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives the old-fashioned way in 2022 – one door at a time.
Perez seemed to emerge out of nowhere to win WA-3, a distinctly Republican leaning district. She and her supporters knocked on 40,000 doors to pull off what pundits called the political upset of the year.
Born and raised in rural Southwest Washington, Perez earned a B.A. in economics from Reed College. After graduating, she and her husband opened an auto repair shop in Portland, Oregon, which they still own and operate today.
Perez became involved in politics in 2016 as an environmental activist in Southwest Washington. She later served as a member of the Washington State Democratic Central Committee and as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2020.

On the Issues
In 2022, she ran for the open seat in WA-03. Perez emphasized her background as a small business owner, her commitment to working families and rural communities, and her passion for issues like environmental protection and economic justice. She also pointed out a stark difference between herself and her opponent – she supports women’s reproductive freedom.
In Congress, Perez has used her position on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to push for policies to invest in rural infrastructure, support small businesses, and promote sustainable economic development.
As a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, Perez has been a leading voice on issues related to environmental protection and climate action. She has pushed for policies to protect public lands, invest in clean energy, and support communities impacted by climate change.
Throughout her time in Congress, Perez has become known for her authenticity, her willingness to listen to all sides of an issue, and her determination to find practical solutions to the challenges facing her district.
