Curtis Hertel Jr.
Michigan, Congress (MI-07)
Curtis Hertel Jr. is a seasoned political leader from Michigan’s 7th district with a long history of public service. He holds a bachelor's degree from James Madison College at Michigan State University and has served on the Ingham County Board of Commissioners and as Ingham County Register of Deeds. Hertel was elected to the Michigan State Senate in 2014, where he served the 23rd district, including Lansing and surrounding areas.
As Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s director of legislative affairs, Hertel played a key role in passing bipartisan legislation that cut taxes for seniors and working families, expanded workers’ rights, and secured investments in advanced manufacturing. He was instrumental in repealing the 1931 law banning abortion in Michigan and bringing electric-vehicle and battery manufacturing jobs to the state.

On the Issues
Curtis Hertel Jr. is running for Congress to continue his work in bringing next-generation auto plants to Michigan, protecting voting rights and upholding democratic principles, and addressing the urgent challenges of climate change. He has already proven his ability to negotiate with major corporations like GM to secure electric vehicle and battery manufacturing projects for the Lansing and Detroit regions, creating good-paying jobs for Michigan residents.
Following the tragic mass shooting at Michigan State University, where his son was on campus, Hertel led efforts to pass bipartisan gun safety legislation, including red flag laws and extreme risk protection orders. He also understands the impact of climate change on Michigan’s communities and is focused on supporting the state’s agricultural industry, protecting families from rising insurance costs, and ensuring that Michigan’s lakes and waterways are preserved for future generations.
In Congress, Hertel will work to bring supply chains back to the U.S., maintain manufacturing momentum, and create opportunities for all Mid-Michiganders, regardless of their educational background.
