Have you heard about the Northeast Arizona (NEAZ) Native Democrats? If you have, you know how important this organization is to moving Arizona blue. If you haven’t, you’ll want to learn how this Native-led organization is empowering its neighbors to vote on Navajo, Hopi and Apache lands in Northeast Arizona.
The sovereign lands of Northeast Arizona (NEAZ) are home to people and cultures that predate the United States. The Diné (Navajo), Hopi and Apache have called this land home since time immemorial. These lands are rich with a history of democracy and justice. Power in NEAZ resides in Native voices and voters. Generations of dissenters, leaders, storytellers and activists have given us their voices to continue the fight.
NEAZ Native Democrats are changing the political landscape in Arizona with national implications:
* In 2020, Indigenous communities in Arizona had record-breaking turnout and helped elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and Mark Kelly.
* In 2022, voters in sovereign lands saw the only voter turnout increase in Arizona over 2018 and helped elect Senator Mark Kelly, Governor Katie Hobbs, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Attorney General Kris Mayes.
The stakes are just as high in 2024. Indigenous voters in Arizona are critical to retaining the White House and growing the Senate majority, plus county-wide elections will impact who gets to vote and how they vote in their communities.
That’s where we come in! SL SGV and Swing Left Maricopa County (AZ) are partnering again, this time to support NEAZ Native Democrats field organizers in their pursuit to make their voices heard. To prepare for the postcarding events, you’ll need to buy 25 postcards ahead of time. We suggest you order them on Etsy as soon as you register. NEAZ is specific as to what designs will resonate with Indigenous people — photos of nature, excluding owls, are preferred. Here are a few samples:
