Florida Court Rejects DeSantis Gerrymander

The Florida Supreme Court unanimously rejected Gov. Ron DeSantis’ request to weaken the district of a Black Democratic congressman by adding more Republican voters to his district.

The state Senate and House have drawn up maps that left Florida’s 5th district relatively intact. U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, D, currently represents the North Florida district, a minority-access seat created under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. DeSantis was pushing a map that would make Lawson’s district lean Republican as well as dilute a South Florida district held by Democratic U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.

According to The Cook Political Report, the map that DeSantis advanced, which took his own Florida Republican legislators by surprise, would convert the 16 Republican and 11 Democrat delegation to 20 Republican and 8 Democrat.
