Andrea Salinas

Oregon, Congress (OR-06)

Background

A community organizer and former state legislator, Andrea Salinas is serving her first term as Congresswoman of Oregon's 6th congressional district.

Born in California to Mexican immigrant parents, Salinas grew up in a farmworker family. A first-generation college student, she worked several jobs to put herself through the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a degree in psychology and Chicano studies.

After college, Salinas worked as a US congressional aide and policy advisor to Senator Harry Reid and Congressman Pete Stark. Later, served as a district aide for U.S. Representative Darlene Hooley in Oregon. Andrea went on to serve as an advocate for labor unions, environmental groups, and reproductive rights organizations in Oregon.

In 2017, she was appointed to the Oregon House of Representatives and served through the end of her term in 2022.

In the state legislature, Salinas played a key role in passing landmark legislation to establish paid family and medical leave, cap carbon emissions, and expand access to affordable housing. She also led efforts to protect Oregon's immigrant communities.

On the Issues

In 2022, Salinas ran in Oregon’s newly created 6th congressional district.

Since arriving in Congress, Salinas has continued to prioritize the needs of working families and marginalized communities. She was appointed to the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Education and Labor. There, she advocates for policies to invest in clean energy infrastructure, protect public lands, and expand access to quality, affordable education.

As a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Salinas has also been a vocal advocate for the Latino community. She has pushed for policies to address immigration reform, protect DREAMers, and promote greater economic opportunity for Latino families.
