Gabe Vasquez

New Mexico, Congress (NM-02)

Background

Gabe Vasquez, D, transformed his early interest in conservation and public lands into action while serving as U.S. representative for New Mexico's 2nd congressional district since 2021.

A first-generation Mexican-American, Vasquez was born and raised in Las Cruces, NM. Vasquez grew up exploring the state's public lands and developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He attended New Mexico State University, where he earned a degree in journalism and mass communications.

After college, Vasquez worked as a field representative for Senator Martin Heinrich, focusing on public lands and conservation issues. He was instrumental in the designation of the 50,000-acre Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument, protecting it from harmful development and safeguarding it for future generations. He also served as the Las Cruces Green Chamber of Commerce executive director, promoting sustainable economic development in southern New Mexico.

On the Issues

In 2020, Vasquez challenged the incumbent Republican representative in New Mexico's 2nd district. Vasquez emphasized his background in conservation and his commitment to issues like renewable energy development, access to public lands, and rural economic development.

In Congress, Vasquez has continued to prioritize conservation and climate action, serving on the House Committee on Natural Resources. He advocates for policies to protect New Mexico's public lands, invest in renewable energy infrastructure, and support outdoor recreation and tourism.

As a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Vasquez has also been a vocal advocate for the Latino community. He has pushed for policies to address immigration reform, expand access to healthcare and education, and promote greater diversity and inclusion in all aspects of society.
