Congressman Matt Cartwright is running for re-election in Pennsylvania’s 8th district, having first been elected to Congress in 2012.

Congressman Matt Cartwright has successfully won six elections to represent Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District.


Born in 1961 in Erie Pennsylvania, Matt Cartwright has been representing his state in Congress since 2013. His mother was an attorney, and his father was an electrical manufacturing company executive. After majoring in history at Hamilton College, he earned a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and practiced law for many years. He and his wife, Marion Munley, a personal injury attorney, live in Moosic and have two sons.

He is a senior member of the Committee on Appropriations, where he serves as the ranking member of the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee, and the second-highest Democrat on the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee. He is also a member of the House Democratic Committee on Steering and Policy.

In addition, he is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Climate Solutions Caucus, and the House Pro-Choice Caucus, among others.

According to his campaign website, Cartwright “has ensured the federal government is deeply invested in northeastern Pennsylvania by bringing home more federal investment than any other member of Congress from the state.”

  • Supports expanding addiction counseling and resources to counter the opioid abuse epidemic.
