Yadira Caraveo

Colorado, Congress (C0-08)

Background

U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo (CO-08) is the first Latina to represent Colorado in the U.S. House of Representatives. Colorado’s newly created 8th congressional district covers the northern suburbs of Denver.

The daughter of Mexican immigrants, Caraveo was born and raised in the city of Thornton. She majored in biology at Regis University and became the first in her family to earn a college degree. She then attended medical school at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Caraveo practiced as a pediatrician in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Thornton, Colorado, for more than decade before entering politics.

On the Issues

Caraveo's first venture into public service came in 2018, when she was elected to the Colorado State House of Representatives. In the state legislature, she gained a reputation as a pragmatic, solution-oriented lawmaker, focusing on issues like healthcare access, education funding, and environmental protection.

Caraveo's proven ability to work across the aisle served her well when she ran for Congress in 2022, emerging victorious in a closely watched race. She won by less than 1 percentage point. Since arriving in Washington, she has continued that collaborative approach, securing spots on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee.

In Congress, Caraveo has prioritized issues important to her diverse, fast-growing district. She has championed legislation to expand pediatric mental health services, support STEM education, and invest in clean energy infrastructure. Caraveo has also been an outspoken advocate for immigration reform, drawing on her own family's experience to push for more humane and pragmatic policies.
