Lauren Underwood represents Illinois’ 14th Congressional District. When first elected in 2018, she was the youngest black woman to serve in Congress. Graduating from the University of Michigan and earning a Master of Science in Nursing degree from John Hopkins University, Underwood was a policy coordinator and senior advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Obama, helping communities across the country prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters, bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. In Congress, She has been the most powerful Congressional advocate ever in addressing neonatal mortality and the shocking disparities in maternal health. Trained as a public health nurse, Rep. Underwood understands as very few others do how to protect pregnant women and vulnerable newborns. Underwood serves on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and the Committee on Appropriations. She cofounded and serves on the Black Maternal Health Caucus and is a member of the Future Forum and the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.
