Dr. Amish Shah is the Democratic nominee for Arizona's 1st Congressional District, having won the July 2026 primary over Marlene Galán-Woods despite millions of dollars in outside spending against him by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which had backed his opponent. He will face Republican nominee Jay Feely, a former NFL kicker endorsed by President Trump, in a race widely viewed as one of Democrats' top pickup opportunities nationally — Shah came within 3 points of flipping the seat in 2024, one of the closest margins of any House Republican that cycle.

Born and raised in Chicago, Shah earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Northwestern University in 1997, an M.D. from Northwestern in 2001, and a Master of Public Health from UC Berkeley in 2003. He is a board-certified emergency medicine physician who has worked with the Mayo Clinic, Dignity Health, and IASIS Healthcare, served as chief medical officer of Urgent Consult, and worked as an airway management physician for the New York Jets.

Shah served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2019 to 2024, first winning election in 2018 by defeating an incumbent, and going on to pass more bills into law than any other Arizona Democrat in the past decade, according to MoveOn's endorsement of his campaign. In the legislature, he worked across the aisle to protect access to the abortion medication mifepristone and has a 100% pro-choice voting record. He has also been a longtime advocate for animal welfare, leading efforts to crack down on puppy mills and ban the declawing of cats.

  • Amish Shah has pledged to fight for:
  • Stopping partisan gerrymandering and eliminating dark money from politics
  • Ensuring families can afford groceries and other essentials
  • Ending tariffs he says are driving up prices for Arizona families
  • Protecting Social Security and Medicare and reversing Medicaid cuts
  • Expanding healthcare coverage and lowering prescription drug prices
  • Codifying Roe v. Wade to protect reproductive freedom
  • Defending public education funding and raising teacher pay
  • Reducing gun violence while fully funding police
  • Stopping the flow of fentanyl across the border
  • Combating animal cruelty, including puppy mills and factory farming abuses
  • Shah has emphasized his record of bipartisan legislative wins in the Arizona House and his identity as a practicing ER physician, arguing that his hands-on healthcare experience gives him a distinct perspective on the costs families face.
