Sean McCann is the Democratic nominee for Michigan's 4th Congressional District, having won the August 2026 primary to take on Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga in one of Michigan's most closely watched House races. A member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, McCann currently represents the Kalamazoo area in the Michigan Senate and is running to bring the same practical, results-driven approach he's built in Lansing to Washington.

A lifelong Michigander, McCann earned his political science degree from Western Michigan University in 1993. Before entering elected office, he worked as director of financial development for the American Red Cross, leading local disaster relief efforts, and served as executive director of the Vine Neighborhood Association and Kalamazoo Friends of Recreation. He and his wife are raising their family in Kalamazoo, where he has spent his career working to make life better for Southwest Michigan.

McCann spent a decade on the Kalamazoo City Commission before being elected to the Michigan House in 2010 and later the Michigan Senate, where he now chairs the Energy and Environment Committee. In Lansing, he helped expand Medicaid to more than a million Michiganders, worked to end the state's retirement tax, expanded the working families tax credit, and supported funding to help reopen the Palisades Nuclear Plant as part of a clean-energy future. He's built a reputation as a serious problem-solver who works across the aisle to get things done, and enters the general election backed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten.
